I didn’t flinch. Not out of some misplaced arrogance. I just never expected to catch something so large with my outmatched gear.
I was using 2-pound fishing line. A small pole. Gas station variety. It was part of my daily routine to catch the buckets of Brim that I love to fry for dinner.
While I was casting my red worm bait into the water – it caught on something.
I knew it was something large. The reel stopped working. Cranking was useless. The hooked fish was pulling away!
So I asked a passerby if they could see the fish. They told me the water was too dark. But they said keep pulling. So I did.
Of course, I expected a carp or other “trash fish”. Not panicking, I decided to throw down the pole and start manually pulling the line towards the shore.
Only after I pulled it on shore did I realize my good fortune. Time to head to Walmart to buy an electric fillet knife. No way I’m doing that with my knife!
