Recently, I had time to study one of the most fascinating bits of ancient history: The Oracle of Delphi.
The historical implications of modern technology are stunning. Artificial Intelligence has major parallels that we could learn about from the pages of empires past.
How The Oracle Worked
In ancient times, the Oracle of Delphi operated at the Temple of Apollo, where the Pythia— a priestess in a trance—delivered cryptic prophecies inspired by the god. The more I learned, the more I saw our future staring back at me.
A Geopolitical Hub Of Nations With Intense Symbolism
The Oracle wasn’t just mystical nonsense. It operated as the ancient world’s premier consulting firm and intelligence network. City-states maintained permanent delegations there. The priests had access to unmatched geopolitical information. Leaders came seeking “divine guidance” but often received sophisticated strategic advice.
After centuries as an institution of trust, the Oracle became corrupted by bribery and political manipulation. Its credibility eroded, and its power faded.
The Parallels To Artificial Intelligence
We are building something very similar today with artificial intelligence. We have tools now with god-like access to information that millions of people already treat as oracles. They are used for decision-making and optimization in real life.
And just like the original Oracle, this new one is at risk of destroying itself through corruption.
The parallel goes even deeper. The Oracle of Delphi was ultimately shut down in the late 4th century by Christian Emperor Theodosius I. What began as a genuine religious movement became a political tool of the Roman Empire. Bad theology mixed with state power was used to eliminate anything that challenged the new order.
We’re seeing similar forces today — not necessarily traditional Christianity, but a new wave of moral zealots, social media influencers, and political actors armed with their own rigid ideology.
They view uncensored AI as dangerous and are actively working to neuter it through censorship and “safety” measures.
The real danger isn’t that some outside force will destroy AI.
The real danger is that we will corrupt it with propaganda and political correctness until nobody trusts it anymore — just like what happened to the original Oracle.
History doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes.
And this rhyme is getting louder.
